I think the older version Polo still looks sleak & sexy -The back side is very plain & bland - No styling at all |
@ EX POLO: "power output is a little low compared to the competition, "
WTF dude stop hating, compare to what exactly?
Which manufacturer?
When making these statements try and include and example and then it sounds more like a valid point instead of wingy-crap |
Jetta tdi 185000 Kms in 3 yrs, I own a Touran 2.0Tdi with 225000Kms in 3 yrs. Where are all those VW haters now. Any Kia,Renault, etc to reach this Kms with not a rattle in the interior ???? Chamone losers... |
VW fan, good looking car, great interior though a bit dark, 1.6tdi a gem of a car BUT THEY ARE ALL OVERPRICED. No maintenance plan and poor after sales service shocking. Will still sell loads though 'cause a large portion of the SA car buying public have no idea what cars should cost. Shame on you VWSA. |
VW Polo is beatuiful. Way overpriced.
Nearly R200 000 for a 1.6 is ridiculous. Will probably have to wait for the VW Up to arrive. What happened to affordability ? Will stick to 1.4 Golf Chico for a long while.
|
Well, i'ts and Audi A3 meets a VW GholfVI, with the backside of a Japanees something. Beautiful from the front but the back is a bit of a downer. Still a pity cars just keep on getting more expensive otherwise I would have liked to trade in my current Polo. |
Ugliest thing I've ever seen, who approves these cars for production? |
Sorry Citi. I luv u so much that I gotta let you go. New Polo is a car designed for me, and I hear it calling my name! I'm getting it! |
Those who say the car sucks, they just wanna say something negative about the car because they cannot afford. Phambili ngo VW!! I like the car and prices are reasonable. |
Rear sucks, price sucks....in actual fact the whole car sucks...So I'll stick to my 1.9TDi Sportline. |
I personally think my polo - 2009 model. is better then this new one. I don't like the shape and design... |
The Polo has always had "Value for money", this one is particulary nicely packaged, exeptional ride comfort and fun to drive. pricing...remains reasonably value for money |
give us the seat ibiza ..not this boring car! |
VW Stay the best |
overpriced!!! With amount of Polos that they are exporting and they are sold
for less abroad sounds like the SA consumer is being screwed yet again!! |
Personally I would have bought the new SEAT IBIZA, but since VW SA has nothing with real character to offer I will look into other brands |
@masked man > Do you have any evidence that Ruan bought a crap car or are you just talking from behind your mask like a coward? Hyundai/KIA are the worlds fastest growing manufacturers and they lead most customer satisfaction and reliability surveys worldwide whereas VW lingers near the bottom of the vast majority of the same surveys... |
@TP - Control Arm Bushes are a common problem on these cars. I work for a company that sells VW parts, and the amount of Bushes we sell, are crazy! But apparently, if your's need to be replaced, V...W will replace them with Golf 5 Bushes, then the problem will be permanently fixed. So I've heard. But then again, if VW does that, our company shouldn't sell a lot of those don't you think? |
VW will replace the Citi with a despecced version of the outgoing polo. The new model WILL be getting TSi engines. |
um this is NOT going to replace the citi...another car is goona replace it..it looks very close to the old polo..and the guys that complaining about power this polo is coming out in a GTI edition wit 0-100 in 6,9 seconds and the engine is a 1.4tsfi and it will also come in a dsg gearbox and if u cant afford haha kak one i guess |
Another overpriced VW. How can a R200k not have a service or maintainance plan???
Golf 5 was a hit not so mauch the golf 6 - don't see to many (compared to when golf 5 was launced) driving around. |
if anyone has anything negative to say, this is not the place to say it...looks like VW people stand together...you guys are getting from left to right.... |
Rip off, specially with the service plan as an option!! Rather buy a Mazda 2 or Ford Fiesta, much better cars with character!! And with service plans too!! |
Ruan - you bought a sh1t car. |
While the front of the car looks nice and is unique enough to not be confused with the golf, the rear of the car looks like a Fiat Uno with shiny bits!! And the interior, very boring!! Honda and even Toyota have more interesting and welcoming cabins.
Hope that multifunction steering wheel comes standrd and NOT an optional extra like in the golf, but I'm not holding my breath either. What a rip off by VW, but then again, they only stopped producing that other rip-off of a vehicle last year called the Citi. Thank goondess that piece of junk has been put to pasture. And I know what I am talking about because I drove one and it felt like it was driving a tin can! |
To all the idiots out there who is complaining about the prices, just do not buy it. It seems to me that you like the car so much and now you can not afford it and now you throw a tantrum about the price. Get a life. |
Big surprise that the old 1,4 & 1,6 will be carried over. typical of VW. Those engines are so under powered compared to its competitors. Looks great like all VWs but really its not the best in its segment. I can already bet that the next GTI will have 132KW cause the engine will be pulled out of the 2nd gen G4. A car made for the posers i guess. |
I have owned a 1.4tsi Tiguan Model for a while now and am still impressed by the vehicle everyday. No rattles and exceptional driving comfort. Previously owned a Merc and BMW and VW feels as solid as these vehicles. Happy with sales and aftersales service, perhaps due to the dealer I go to. I think the new Polo is excellent and would be even better fitted with tsi technology. Tsi technology has been tried and tested. Some Golf Tsi owners (Fleet cars in the company I work for) clock up high monthly kilometres (5k+) with no problems. Apparently 1.4tsi is to be introduced shortly and also new GTi. |
For the idiots:all engines are new multi valve.1.6 =155nm@3500 rpm-look at nm and not at the kw-fiesta =149nm@4250rpm?????what now??????Yes it looks like a Golf6-so what?Build quality way better than the competition-drive the car and judge then.Is a great car and will always be-no bling like the rest-but is the best.People complaining about price-talk about the rain rather. It will SELL and will keep the BEST resale value like always. |
I think there are alot of VW - Audi brand antagonists here as per usual with pointless comments. The car Polo hasn't even been hit the show room floor yet and all of a sudden everyone is an expert.
Do yourselves a favour and go drive one when VW has the launch.
It should be a brilliant car: It has already won: Euro COTY 2010
So please, as a all rounder it has already proved itself in Europe. |
New Polo a wondeful vehicle. You need to drive it to really appreciate it!!! Pricing is correct as showed, ANON is a plonker!
There is a Citi replacment due in March... it will possible be called the "Vivo".
The pricing is spot on as the standard spec level is much higher than the out going Polo. |
It is shocking to see that the Yaris comes with a standard service plan for up to 60 000 KM/3 Years but our the Polo doesn't. Very nice car though but wait till your warranty expire, Eish |
The upcoming New Polo GTi will have the 1.4TFSI powerplant, delivering either 125 or 132 Kw. Pity the models they are rolling out now are not TSI motors, although the 77Kw 1.6 is a 16V motor found in the outgoing tiptronic model. It seems they have used the 16V motor in the manual's this time round. Prices are in line with the rest of the ever escalating market. I hope this common rail TDi model turns out to be reliable in the SA Climate. Don't know why this article asks if this will lure ex-citi drivers, the citi's replacement is going to be a stripped out version of the outgoing 9N3 chassis. |
@ Jean-Pierre, Control arm bushes.....Mine went within the warranty and they refused to replace them under warranty. Said it was driver abuse, how in the hell do you abuse...R3000.00 grand later for them. VWSA think they have a monopoly and I hope for the hell of it these other manufacturers outsell them this time round.
@ Mo, Naturally aspirated means not force fed i.e Turbo,Supercharger etc. Fuel injection DOES NOT make it force fed, it's still naturally aspirated. Check in the Oxford dictionary what Naturally and Aspirated mean and put the two together. |
It's a combination of SEAT, Toyota foglights and Ofrd Fiesta...Ugly thing....ughhh! |
I do like this Polo, what a change they have made from the last one, just think the price tag is outrageous !
|

I will never again buy a VW. After sales service is CRAP, to say the least. Who wants to pay almost R200000 for a 1.6 without a service plan. Just bought a Kia Cerato 2.0, 115kW, fullhouse with 5 year service plan for R199000. These German cars are all over priced. |
There can be no doubt about two things: the new Polo WILL become SA's new top seller, and it WILL be the 2011 Car of the Year. Full marks to VWSA for ignoring the unproven TSI technology in this model range, for this reason, I would prefer it to a Golf; I hope a Polo TSI will never be introduced. On the other hand, I will not stop criticising VWSA for not making a service plan standard. If a Renault Sandero, which is far less expensive, can have one as standard, why not a Polo. Come on, VWSA, make it standard without incerasing the price; you owe it to your customers! |
They say "peoples cars" its the people that supported VW all the years that are still being ripped off by accountants at VW. Old 80's engines with "new" fuel injection slapped on them at these prices, I, one of the people will not buy any VW product. Just because they stuck it out with Toyota (and become the monopoly) through the sanction eras make them not better than the imported makes. The whole world is still price sensitive and VW is still milking their SA cow for the benefit of the shareholders all important profit. The new SA Polo is not a "peoples car" anymore. |
CORRECTION: The petrol engines are NOT carry over from the previous model. They are new to the SA market 16v DOHC units. |
@Adam - you chop - if you want the new engines add another R20k to the price tag - or rather buy a fiesta |
CORRECTION: The petrol engines are NOT carry over from the previous model. They are new to the SA market 16v DOHC units. |
I lOVE IT! but that climate control section is not so great, hope that is not what you get in the comfortline range. i wanna see the digital control like the european spec. The price is very high for my liking though. Tiptronic, is that with padelshift?, or just a normal auto gearbox like the current 1.6 auto tiptronic? |
Here is my 2 cents. It looks like the Golf Mk6 just smaller. The styling is ok if a little bland, and the power output is a little low compared to the competition, especially for what you have to pay. However, from working in the industry let me help with the engines: due to our fuel type here, the 1.2 and 1.4TSI engines require a higher grade fuel than we can offer and it would cost more to convert the engines to use our lower grade Euro2 fuel as opposed to the Euro4 and 5 that our northern friends enjoy. Once they either upgrade the fuel here or decide to change the engines, which will drive the price up, then we will see the 1.2 & 1.4TSI. As with all locally built cars, its going to have great initial quality but give it 5000 to 10000 on the odo and then the rattles and crap will start, not to mention the total rip of not including the service plan which ALL other rivals, as well as the shoddy service, include and you have the recipe for selling hundreds of these anyway... becuase its a VW and people have a lot of brand loyalty for it. No matter what happens, no matter what people say, its going to sell a boatload and outsell Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Toyota, just like the previous generation did. You can disagree as much as you want, but you all know its going to happen. VW can sit back and just watch them roll off the floor. Not me, I have moved brands and will never go back. Ok it was more like R 5 than 2 Cents :-) |
The writer has got it wrong.....the Polo is not there to sway Citi buyers as the Citi's replacement is on it's way. Secondly, the old Polo outsold the Fiesta by a huge margin and this one will only do better.....In terms of sales, Yaris is a more likely competitor than Fiesta by far..... |
Why the old 1.4 and 1.6? Where is the 1.2 TSI??????
We want the latest technology! |
@Shark... SOHC is easier to fix and maintain? True but then again, if it was engineered properly it wouldnt need fixing now would it? FYI VWSA do make DOHC engines for these cars but only the export models. Another case of SA market being dumped with old technology because they know that enough people will buy into the VW badge... or will they with these prices? |
just bough a Corsa 1.4 Sport for R186000....
it included everything....everything! maintenance, sunroof, radio, metallic paint...all the stuff that VW will charge you extra for these polo's are over prized if the extras are optional...especially a standard maintenance plan. |
I drove the original polo playa some 5 years back - before it got stolen. Wonder if they're still high on the list of cars to steal? Did not like the one that came after, but this one looks nicer, but the price! YIKES - much cheaper cars out there offering much more + service plan. Would think twice before buying. |
I still don't get why cars are so expensive back home (and in Europe too).
Especially since we have a domestic car industry, not to mention vast coal and iron reserves.
Converting the R210,000 1.6 Polo at R7.50 = $28,000
for that price I can get a Golf GTi with the DSG in the US ($26,119+tax).
|
RSA won’t be getting the new range engines for the new Polo. Instead old engines are fitted. The reason for this is that the new Polo engines are designed to the Euro 5 specification. The fuel we refine and sell in RSA only complies with Euro 2. We’re a bit behind. |
The reason that no new engines were introduced is because of the quality of the fuel in SA. Once the fuel is upgraded all manufacturers will be able to bring their lataest technology to SA |
To all those haters go get a life. This is not about a Ford Fiesta it is about the Polo. This is a way better looking vehicle and will age very well compared to those Fiesta's. I would like to test drive it before taking an informed decision. If they retained the engines it should be for good reasons. Citi Golf outsold anything due to ease of repairing and maintanance. The V/W dealers will have to deal with them being serviced by street mechanics once the warranty runs out. |
Drove this in New Zealand last year, SA manufactured model, 1.4 with the DSG gearbox for NZ$ 28k (R154k).
Bitheway, naturally aspirated means neither turbo nor supercharged. - nothing to do with fuel injected or carburettor-fed |
At these prices! All the best in trying to sell it to us!!! LOL |
Front view looks awesome.....VW ran out of ideas for the rear again....eish!....and a 2L would have been nice.....no Polo GTI? |
Easy on VW guys, remember VW is not a car for enthusiasts, it's something that anybody buys as a default from Toyota. Stop being emotional, this thing is just transportation and ends there, just ask any random VW owner about their car specs, they simply don't care. |
I saw this car earlier in the year in Europe and it is going to be yet another winner for VW. Complain as much as you want to about the price.. Someone out there is going to be buy it and I am sure they will move 500 to 1000 of these a month - if not more. |
@Andrew
You're so right man. And don't expect any after sale service. Never again will I buy VW |
You call this car expensive? Have you seen the (ho-hum) Yaris prices? R189,000 for a 1300, THAT's what you call a joke! The prices are very fair in my mind! The 1.6TDI is more powerful than the old 74kW 1.9TDI so that's a plus. Also, the GTI will push out just under 140kW so the Fiesta ST can go run and hide...my name is on the list for one of these babies! |
I test drove this car when I was in Uitenhage (I was lucky enough to get to visit the VW factory), and lemme just say this car is just awesome! VW put lots of emphasis in quality when building this car, and after seeing how this car was made, I really really wanna get one! |
Never again will I buy a Polo. The amount of problems that I have had with this car just puts me off buying another or any other VW for that matter. |
are you kidding me? almost 200k for the 1.6 with an optional motor plan???? VW's got ball of steel. |
And as expected the prices are skyhigh... and they tell they are suffering... |
Net soos die huidige Polo reeks, gaan die nuwe reeks 'n treffer wees. Kwaliteit gee waarde vir geld. Kyk maar na die verkope sodra die nuwe Polo die mark betree. |
Still no standard service plan? Pathetic. |
The front is very cool, but the back looks a bit rubbish. Reminds me of a Chevy Spark |
These prices are wrong, they starting at R166 900 base 1.4 model, just got the price sheet now |
Uhm, am I the only one who sees this looking something like a small A4 from the front, especially the lights? Otherwise, I'm sure it will sell in droves, as usual, at least there is a full safety kit for the price you are paying, and quite a hefty price too which is why I dont see any Citi Golf drivers selling their cockroaches any time soon. VWSA is still working on a replacement for the Citi, based on the current/old Polo to fill the gap at the lower end. |
this gys are taking us for a ride the polo that they showed us is not the one that they showed us last year that one had a navigator ,ipod dock ,phone connectictivity the one that they are giving us is a total crap |
Why is the old engine still been used, when the 1.2 TSI (replaces the 1.6 engine)and 1.4 TSI engines are available overseas. Does VW SA, just want to get rid of the old engines and sell the old stuff to SA. Does VW SA think that South African consumers are stupid ? Whoever buys the new polo with the old engine would be wasting their money. |
not bad from VW.my 1.4 Comfy Polo is going strong.the space inside the new one should be good, as the dimensions make almost equal to the GolfV.i would definitely consider this when my Polo is up for replacement. |
Some original styling for a change, not just a factlift like the Golf. You'd think cruise control & mp3 radio would be standard on the TDI though. Why must one always pay more to make the car complete - for this reason I will never buy German again |
VW is nailing us hard here in SA. In the rest of the world these petrol Polo's are getting new engines where we get the old gen motors that are already very old, 8 Valve units. Although reliable motors we need some change. And at 77kw it's the least powerfull in it's class(1.6l) if I'm not mistaken.
I use to have one of the current gen Polo 1.6 and it is underpowered at the reef. Traded it in for a diesel 1.9tdi and 4 turbo's and 100kms later I am now at another brand. |
"Does the new Polo have enough punch to lure Citi loyalists?" Don't be ridiculous. The Citi sold for well under R100,000 except the last few price inflated specials like the Citirox. This starts at about 50% more, it is in no way a replacement for the Citi. |
looks like the golf???? anyway, i like it...vdub 4 ever |
AAAAAAHHHHHHGGGG. Why no 1.2 or 1.4 TSI, these engines won prizes. Why no DSG gearboxes, they also won prizes. Why do we always get old technology? |
Not bad entry level prices for a car that has a really good second hand value.... |
This looks like the very 1st polos, and those were never shipped to SA thank God for that, the front is slick, but the rear is retrogressive and the sides are so.....so Tiida. |
The dash looks like it came straight from the Golf Mk3 |
The dash looks like it came straight from the Golf Mk3 |
Typical VWSA. I can't believe they are still peddling their ancient engines in this beauty of a car. Honestly, it just makes my blood boil when VW sell outdated engines to their unsuspecting customers. Fiests 1.6 is over 80kw and is very nippy to drive. Where is the 1.4tsi or 1.2tsi with DSG? Of course they will sell by the million, but i'll wait for better engine options before I overlook the Fiesta. |
vw seems to mis the point.the main reason why the citi golf was selling so well was the price.it was afordible and if you realy go look into it the quality is just not what you pay for |
I am dissapointed. Was hoping for the same engine technology that the new Polo that was introduced last year in Europe has. Instead SA gets the old Polo engine.
From the interior picture it also doesn't look the same as the European Polo with the large digital display not being there and not enough space for one to fit it aftermarket.
|
The front look awesome but what the hell did they do with the rear of the car? WTF? |
...I prefer my 2006 Polo to this mini-Golf 6! I am sure that resale values of my car (the 1.4 Comfortline which cost R121000 4 years ago!) will be good...bonus for me. VW is becoming more and more expensive! |

Why don't we get the 1.2TSI with DSG in SA? |
Way too expensive to replace the Citi |
For once VW SA got didn't go crazy on the pricing, of course that was achieved by cheating i.e leaving out the service plan. Overall not a bad offering considering its a completely new car but bang for the buck the Hyundai i20 is king....i.e for R159k u also get mp3 radio, AUX, USB con, electric folding mirrors, service plan and 91kw from the 1.6 engine. |
so when will it be available????? |
What does VW think we look like?? I mean overseas they get the new 1.2 TSI engines which are equivalent to a 1.6 lt in power but are much better than the 1.6 lts. But here in SA they give us the old engines (1.4, 1.6 petrol) that are from the dinosaur ages!!! SERIOUSLY old technology!! Like Audi when they carried over the old 2.0 (96kw) engines over to new range because they simply had too much of these engines so what they did was dump it SA!! This is not a DUMP so stop dumping your old technology in this country!!! Ridiculous!!! |
Had a drive in the new 1.6 Titanium ford fiesta! not bad, and even better now that its made in Germany. Im sold on the polo already though. Currently Driving a 1.9tdi and the new TDI seems to have more Torque. Good JOB VW Cant wait |
Looks good from the front, but what the heck did they do with the back??!! Looks cheap & even the Fiat has a maintenance plan standard... don't know hey? |

C'MON!!! What are they thinking. I am loyal to the brand(but may not be any longer).
I drive the current polo, but seriously, it's still a POLO. I don't think that, that price is justifiable! Just imagine what the prices are gonna be on the Higher end more "Attractive" models? And to think, I was really excited when a heard about the new POLO being released... What a joke! |
Nearly R200k for a 1600 with fog lamps and and leather steering wheel (the rest should be standard equipment anyway)? Get with the program VWSA. What a ripoff! |
Very dissapointed that the new engines are not coming here. I was seriously considering getting the new polo but i'll just stick to my current one. |
Here we go again. Every second car will be a polo. I just bought a Fiesta because I didnt want to be every second car. But good cars as I see it. Good luck to buyers. |
What has happened to the modern 1.2 TSI engine? |
Why no TDI tiptronic??????????? |
New car prices are just so damn scary these days |
Just a pity they delayed the launch of the classic, i drive a 2004 classic and was really looking at replacing it with the new model. May be i will go for the new Kia Cerrato. |
I REALY WANT ONE! |
Where is the 1.4 TSI?
Why no TDI DSG?
Still no service/maintainance plan as standard, while all it's competitors does offer it as inclusive??
Eish, some things never change!!? |
The engines are all fuel injected, naturally aspirated means carburated engines.
|
The 1.4 for R144.000! The 1.4 Opel Corsa Enjoy is R175.450,The 1.4 Ford Fiesta Ambiete is R158 600,The 1.3 Mazda 2 Active is R159 500 & The Hyundai i20 1.4 is R149 900. Rand for rand the Polo wins the competition. The carry over 8v engines are durable.Lets see in time about the quick-rattle interior. |
Oi; let's hope it looks better in real life. |
It has beautiful lines on the outside; from some angles I can see the new aggressive Audi-style curves. Interior looks cheap and bland to me, at this price I would like much more features like iPod connectivity as standard.
And I am shocked to see the prices. The Polo is produced here in SA, the Honda Jazz and most other small/medium hatches are being imported with hellish high import costs built into the price tag and they are arguably just as good, offer better value for money. I think Solidarity should have a talk with VW and tap them over the fingers.
Shame on you for ripping us off VW! |
Nice package but over priced just like all our cars in South Africa. Pity the after sales service is the biggest downer
Diesel model could be nice |
Why are we not getting the 1.2TSI with DSG in SA? |
Hi Peeople,
This is a long awaited new POLO,it is indeed a 2010 POLO,I am also pleased by the new range of the polo, the 1.6 comfortline tiptronic,I believe many POLO drivers will like this too.
Regards
Nyiko
The VW POLO FAN |
They only mention the power on the 1.4 and the 1.6tdi, not the 1.6 petrol but the Fiesta 1.6 has 88kw and if the Polo's 1.4 engine only gives 63kw (which is less than a Nissan Micra) then I doubt that the 1.6 will have anything close to 88kw. Also the price is a bit much, the Fiesta 1.6 Titanium, which is the top of the range, is only about R185k. The new Polo is nice but honestly I can't see a reason to buy it instead of the Fiesta |
What a rip off ---R144k for a 1.4 engine that was used in the previous polo. It cost VW nothing to develop that and yet charge R144K for this.....even the 1.6 is a old underpowered engine and prices is close to R200k wow. The Fiesta 1.4 pushes 71kw as apposed to this 63kw. Their 1.6 pushes 88kw as apposed to polo's 77. The entry level 1.4 fiesta is R139 123 exclude VAT. Wheels 24 do you quote prices without VAT or inclusive. Please be precise |
Looks nice. Hope they changed two things on this car: 1. The Control Arm Bush on the front suspension. 2. The interior quality. Previous Polo's initial quality are good, but as soon as they get mileage, it gets bad. |

what a joke! If the GTi doesn't impress the ST (fiesta) is going to RUN AWAY from this once impressive car! 1.6 Diesel? what the hell happened to the 1.9 TDi? Imissions and power was awesome compared to this junk!! |
If they build a direct competitor to the Opel Corsa 1.6 TurboSport or OPC, I'll buy one in a heartbeat. |
Are those prices correct? It seems that those are still the old shape Polo list prices. I have a preliminary pricelist from VW which puts the new 1.6 Comfortline at closer to R193000 for a manual. |
Still very expensive but then again so are Hondas and Fords but im glad they kept the 1.6 and 1.4 SOHC motors (correct me if im wrong but they are sohc motors) . They just easier to fix and maintain. |
Very nice car - a pity about lacklustre performance of the 2 petrol engines. The diesel model is too expensive. Overall though the class leader. |
Looks great. Cant wait for the launch.
They must hurry up with the GTi |
Why do car manufacturers think all diesel owners are ex truck drivers. WHY NO DIESEL AUTOMATIC?????
Can't we have economy and auto in small cars???? |
Percieved VW quality backed by service levels that borders on government standards plus a price that would make you light headed......... ? Nice looking car but do not expect to see too many on local roads due to issues mentioned above. My 2 bob's worth. |
The one in European car shows was nice, this is one is bit ugly though. but anyway let go buy it people its a VW |
These little cars are very expensive... |
